The “Sanmiguelada” is a celebration carried out every September in San Miguel de Allende. This celebration only compares with the “Mardi Gras” in New Orleans or the “Spring Break” in Daytona Beach, Florida. The “Pamplonada” (name derived from Pamplona, Spain, where the traditional bullfights were born) of San Miguel de Allende, began since 1973 and it is also called “Sanmiguelada”. Held on the third Saturday of September, it falls between the Mexico´s Independance Day celebration, the traditional “Grito” (September 16), and the festival of the city's patron saint, San Miguel Arcangel (September 29). This annual celebration attracts more than 20 thousand national and foreign tourists, reason why it is a long weekend full of celebration and excitement.
Saturday noon, at 12:00 p.m., hundreds of brave men, dressing white t-shirts and brightly red scarves, go ahead the central zone of San Miguel which is protected with fences. Between the fences usually a dozen of bulls or more, especially reared for the occasion, are released while hundreds of spectators observe, safe, behind the metal fences.
